Release is CBP's decision on your entry. It is not the same as the truck arriving, and it is not the same as the broker having "filed".

What release is

Once the entry data is transmitted and accepted, CBP can release the goods, hold them for review, or select them for an exam. Until the release status comes back, the driver should not assume the freight can move on.

What happens in order

  1. The documents reach us: commercial invoice, packing list, and the carrier's shipment details.
  2. We prepare the entry and transmit it through ACE.
  3. CBP responds: release, a request for more information, or an exam or hold.
  4. When release is on the entry, the carrier can deliver.

What usually delays release

  • A missing or incomplete commercial invoice
  • A classification question that needs an answer before filing
  • Participating government agency data that is not in yet (FDA is the common one on food)
  • The carrier's advance cargo data not matching the entry
  • An exam selection

What you can do

  • Send documents before the truck leaves, not when it reaches the plaza.
  • Give the driver one number to call.
  • If something is held, tell us right away. A fast answer to CBP's question is the quickest fix.

Release is not the end of CBP's interest in an entry. Keep your records; we can help you with what to retain.
