Claiming USMCA treatment can lower or remove duty on qualifying goods, but only if the goods qualify and you can support the claim.

What we need before we claim

  • A certification of origin that contains the required data elements. It can come from the importer, exporter or producer, depending on the situation.
  • A product description and the tariff classification that match the certification.
  • Origin information: where the goods and their key materials come from, so we can see whether the rule of origin is met.
  • A clear statement of whether you want us to claim preference on this entry.

Why the details matter

The claim is made on the entry, but CBP can ask for the support afterwards. A claim without support can be refused and the duty collected later.

What to keep

Keep the certification and the records that support the origin decision. Ask us what retention period applies to your situation.

When you are unsure

If you do not know whether a product qualifies, say so. We can tell you what is missing before the entry is filed instead of after.
